We get many questions on what we use
to protect our computer.
So thought I would share what I use,
and where to get these programs.
UPDATED 2-5-07
First off I use AVG Anti
- Virus (Free Edition)
Works in XP but not Vista
when I tried to use it.
Program version 7.5.430
Get it at www.grisoft.com
It updates automatically
in the free version.
You have to look for the
free one... go to the products page and scrool all the way
down. Or try this
link.

Now for an Anti Virus for both XP and
Vista
Maybe the best of the best. Just go to
find out why...
CNET Download.com 5 star
rating.
Works with VISTA and
I use it and removed Norton Anti Virus.

Next I use Sunbelt/Kario
Personal Firewall 4
Tried
to use it with VISTA but NO GO. Tried to find one that would run under
VISTA.
Didn't
find one so stayed with the Microsoft version which has been updadted for
VISTA.
Why do you need a firewall?
Together with antivirus and antispyware, it is an absolute
must to protect your PC.
And the Windows Firewall in WinXP isn't checking any
outgoing traffic from your
PC!
Most trial software works
for a month and then stops, but not the Sunbelt Kerio Personal
Firewall. After 30 days,
it shuts down advanced privacy protection features, but will
continue to run with reduced
functionality for free.

Spybot Search and Destroy
(free)
Spybot - Search & Destroy
detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered
by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing
behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without
your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you
see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally
installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has
been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most
probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your
computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D
is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded
your computer.

Spyware Blaster (free)
Spyware, adware, browser
hijackers, and dialers are some of the fastest-growing threats on the Internet
today.
By simply browsing to a
web page, you could find your computer to be the brand-new host of one
of these unwanted fiends!
The most important step
you can take is to secure your system. And SpywareBlaster is the most powerful
protection program available.
Prevent the installation
of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other
potentially unwanted software.
Block spyware/tracking cookies
in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of
potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer.
SpywareBlaster can help
keep your system spyware-free and secure, without interfering with the
"good side" of the web.
And unlike other programs,
SpywareBlaster does not have to remain running in the background.

McAfee SiteAdvisor (free)
SiteAdvisor warns
you before you interact with a dangerous Web site. Traditional security
products focus on trying to clean up problems after they occur.
McAfee SiteAdvisor also
complements and enhances your existing security software by detecting threats
which traditional security products often miss, including spyware attacks,
online scams, and sites that spam you.
